Special event: the Winter Solstice Ceremony has been rescheduled (snowchecked) to Friday, January 5th, from 6 to 9 pm.

Meyer, Counter, Brown

Having long been friends, Meyer, Counter and Brown have had many exhausting and often heated discussions about art, politics, culture, and well, being a man. It was during one particular evening that the idea of being a male artist and how that influences our work came in to our conversation. What it came down to was, yes, maybe, I don’t know, probably.

IAMAMAN

I really have no choice, I am a man. How does that make me different from say, a woman, the only other option? Well even that is not an option.  Specifically, in the process of art making, does being a man have some ingrained difference in the kind of art I make? What about subject matter? Do I make art that is from a reference of point of manliness? What comes first, me, or being a man? Since my history, my biography is all male how can I separate the two? I cannot.

I   AM
A MAN

Stan Meyer, Charles Counter, and Randy Brown are men. Our work undoubtedly comes from a spiritual place that is infused with maleness. Does it specifically speak to issues of men? Not overtly, but surely it does in ways that may or may not be obvious. This raises a question. If one looks at an artwork can they see an apparent masculinity or femininity? Would a man make art that has the energy of Georgia O’Keeffe’s? Would a woman make work that has the same power as Richard Serra? The fact that I use the word art and energy to describe O’Keeffe and power and work to specify Serra is perhaps significant. Or maybe not.

On the surface, this exhibit may not have an answer, but we are hopeful and confident that it will be a stimulus for dialogue. Each of us is a visual communicator that speaks a language that is unique. Our desire is that through our work, this language is deciphered and therefore somewhat understood by the viewer.
