new works by William
Stockman
Opening Reception:
Friday August 22nd, 7 -10 pm
Open First Friday:
Friday September 5th, 7 -10 pm
Ironton is pleased to host an exhibit of Bill Stockman's most
recent drawings. Measuring over 6 feet tall, these works are
the record of Stockman's investigations into recurrent themes:
mortality and death, love, desire, loss, aspiration, failure,
human frailty, hope and transformation.
Drawing is part of
a personal daily practice for Stockman, an immediate way to
process his point of reference. The marks, whether made
by crayon or erasure, are expressive but controlled. The powerful
eloquence of the resulting work is rooted in the sureness and
spareness of his gesture.
"I employ a variety of methods to create images – often I draw from
photographs taken from file sharing networks, newspapers and more recently,
taken myself while going about my days. Equally often I just start moving the
crayon around, make some lines and smudges and see what emerges. Occasionaly,
I draw from life, although I typically find it distracting. Sometimes I blacken
the paper, and draw by erasing. I erase a lot, and the erasures are left as
a kind of evidence or record of formation."
